E-safety applications for the safety of cyclists

Different technological systems (so-called ICT) can be used in the cycling mobility to avoid or prevent accidents or mitigate their consequences.

Some examples are the availability of information on the safest routes, identification of cyclists from other road actors and the use of "intelligent" bicycles.

Although several e-safety applications for cyclists already exist, their effects on the safety of cyclists were recently investigated.

The SAFECYCLE project, funded by the European Commission and implemented in partnership with three other individuals, was born precisely from the idea to fill this gap:

  • Identifying the e-safety potential improvement of safety of cyclists in Europe applications;
  • Creating a base of knowledge and awareness on the issue;
  • Speeding the adoption of e-safety applications for cycling.

SAFECYCLE first realized a review of potentially useful applications for the safety of cyclists. After selecting the most promising, the project has identified, through a detailed analysis (e.g. SWOT analysis, assessments of the impacts on security), the most promising applications and to estimate the costs and benefits.
