Road Safety

A real commitment to reduce mortality

Road safety first. This was one of the main areas of CTL research, since the beginning.

Three key aspects on which the research is concentrated:

  1. computerization of the data collection process;
  2. analysis of collected data;
  3. development of systems/tools to support the management and planning of road safety.

The CTL has been involved in numerous international projects, which are discussed at length later. International experience has enabled the Centre to gain considerable expertise to invest in the projects at national level.

A practical example is the development of a DSS (Decision Support System), information system for decision support, tool based on the computerization of the process of analysis and planning of road safety. In this case, the DSS developed was called ISIDE (Instrumentation for Safety Improvement Design and Evaluation) and it’s a system that seeks to improve decision-making skills of the designers when choosing the most effective interventions for a specific site: the causes of accidents and improved cost/benefits. A further evolution of the system will allow you to enter in the ISIDE a so-called RIA Module which - to varying supply and demand of transport - will be able to evaluate the effects on road safety. Then the RIA module will allow to imagine design proposals through the application of accident rate prediction functions calibrated on the network, the most recent of which is the Safety Manager. It is a modular information system, designed to provide support to the activities of local administrations of road safety, so as to:

  • Collect and manage different types of information, such as on traffic, infrastructure and road accidents;
  • Making decisions in favour of security, based on objective data;
  • Open participation in the improvement of road safety to citizens.
