SafetyNet, the birth of ERSO and DaCoTA: Road Safety Data Collection, Transfer and Analysis

Erso (European Road Safety Observatory) has been defined in the transport White Paper of the European Commission as the European Observatory for Road Safety. His birth is the main achievement of the SafetyNet project (May 2004-October 2008). The Observatory coordinates different sources of data on casualties and the consequences for users of the road. The data are available on the website of ERSO, which in this way supports the decision-making process at both EU and national level.

The CTL researchers, who represented Italy in the project, participated in the definition of recommendations for the transparent and independent investigation of road accidents, by collecting a sample of 450 fatal accidents in our country, then entered into the database, and, in cooperation with the Marche Region, data on 261 accidents with in-depth methodology.

The DaCoTA project's objective has been to define new approaches to collect and organize data on road safety to be applied to European policies and to insert in Erso. The project has developed, among other things, a protocol for the collection of information on safety management processes and best practices in the field of decision making. DaCoTA also developed sources of data and information to be included in the same observatory, with the following objectives: to predict the future trend of the dead on the road through a standardized approach, and then compare the data with the observed trend in the presence of measures to road safety.
